If you have been to Davis Library recently, you will have noticed the large display case which greets visitors at our front entrance. While we usually feature works by local artists or craftspeople, this month we are very pleased to showcase a very special new exhibit in honor of Veterans Day.
The Vietnam War on Record 1961-1974 features an exhibit of recordings on vinyl record and cassette tape about various aspects of the Vietnam War. The exhibit is but a small selection from the private collection of Davis Library staff member Les Waffen and is dedicated to Vietnam War veterans.
As Les notes, "In retrospect, the Vietnam War was the first 'rock n' roll' war, and recorded music and spoken word reflected the mood of the nation and of its military in a time of upheaval: the anger, the pain, the patriotism, the sorrow."
Describing the items in his collection, Les says "Most of the recordings about Vietnam can be categorized as either "pro-war" or "anti-war" in theme. Other recordings clearly relate to the war but are less controversial...and express feelings everyone can relate to, whether it be the homesickness of a soldier on a foreign battlefield, the travails of a prisoner of war, the joy of coming home, or the pain of PTSD."
